Character Information
Character Name: Michael
Age: Actual Age - Timeless. Apparent Age - 68
Canon: The Good Place (TV show)
Canon Point: After Chapter 36 (Season 3, Episode 9), "Janet(s)", as he's leaving Eternal Accounting.
Gender: Unknown, presenting as male.

Character History
Character History: Wiki Summary of Season 1, Season 2, and Season 3. For most of eternity, Michael has been an Architect: an eternal being charged with creating the pockets of existence where human souls go after death. There are two kinds of Architects: those who craft the Bad Places, and those who craft the Good Places. Michael had a vision for a new kind of Bad Place, quite recently as eternity goes: one which seems Good, but where the inhabitants torment each other. When Michael tries his experiment, the four human souls involved figure it out, and decide they want to use the opportunity to better themselves enough to get to the Real Good Place. Michael, realizing that he's royally screwed if his superior finds out, decides that he might as well help them get there, which might help him earn a place there, too. Over the course of all this moral education, his genuine fascination with humans turns into a fondness, and by his current canonpoint, he's attempted to sacrifice himself for their sake on a number of occasions. They just keep caring too much about him to let it happen. Which is a weird thing for a Bad Place Architect to process. Over the course of helping his Soul Squad, he comes to realize that the system by which human souls are judged is irrevocably flawed, and that no other eternals are going to help him fix it: he's going to have to do it himself. He's on his way to take this up with a committee in the Real Good Place when he's brought to the Magic Kingdom, instead. Not the Good Place he was envisioning, but still Pretty Darn Good as places go.

Canon Example: The first two seasons are on Netflix! Hulu has the last five episodes of Season 3. The internet is a cruel place and is denying me legal links to the first seven episodes of that season, which are amazing and full of feelings.

Character Motivation: At Michael's canon point, one line sums up his motivation: "These four humans are all I care about in the world". He is full-force dedicated to saving Eleanor, Chidi, Tahani, and Jason from eternity in the Bad Place, and he doesn't care whose toes he steps on or which bridges he burns to do it. He's cast his boss into oblivion, pissed off the Eternal Judge, and stolen documents from Soul Accounting. God hasn't shown Their face yet in canon (that we know of), but when They do, Michael will probably not hesitate to get right up in God's grill about all of this, either. The Squad has helped him understand humanity and existence in a way no other eternal ever has, and he's prepared to do anything for them. Needless to say, any humans he meets in The Good Place? He's going to have a bit of a soft spot.

Personality: It's hard to unlearn evil, but if they gave out awards, Michael would be Most Improved Player. Even before he started his cooperative effort with the humans in Season 2, he was fascinated with humanity in general, their strange and random behaviors, the little things they found important. You know, as if The Little Mermaid were about a demon who collected paper clips, tape dispensers, and claw machine stuffed animals instead of forks and pipes and corkscrews, and had a gift for torture instead of singing. Over the course of helping his Soul Squad, he came to realize that he wasn't just fascinated with humans: he truly likes them. He wants to emulate them, and once he really starts learning what it's like to be human, he's completely on board for the experience, even when it physically hurts him to start experiencing emotions outside his normal range. (He was formerly of the impression that humans only needed two: confusion and anger.) Michael has spent eternity in a system that had order, and structure, and a sort of sense, terrible and hellish as it was ... and the random chaos of humanity has taken a lot of getting used to. He discovers that it's something to celebrate, though, something to embrace ... even if he's still far from getting it right. His jokes don't always land, he doesn't know how to make basic gestures, and occasionally fails so tremendously at simple tasks that it's a blatant reminder he only looks human. He genuinely wants to be A Good Human, instead of what he is... at the end of the day, maybe comparing him to Pinocchio would be a better fit than Ariel. What Michael truly wants is just to be A Real Boy.

Canon Strength/Weaknesses: Cleverness, lying, manipulation, and reading people are all Michael's strengths as an Architect. He is capable of retaining immense amounts of information and putting it to the best and/or worst possible use depending upon the situation. Once he gets to know someone, he truly can use that knowledge to make their life heaven or hell. Even without his multi-dimensional Architect powers in SMK, Michael will retain this mental skill. He just won't be able to manipulate reality anymore to put that knowledge to use in the ways he usually does.

Michael's biggest weakness is that he still does not understand humanity. He is making a very good effort, but he constantly has to be reminded which actions are good, and that sometimes what he thinks is hysterical is just plain evil. Perfect example: The Trolley Problem. OOPS.

Apprentice Sorcerer Application
Class: Michael is a Monster, hands down. The Good Place does not use the word demon to describe the denizens of the Bad Place, they are simply immortals with terrifying true forms. In Michael's own words, being called a demon is "not completely accurate and we consider it to be a little racist, but it's fine". I think that realizing that not all monsters are evil will be A Huge And Reassuring Thing for him. Meeting Good monsters will be a revelation, to say the least. He will be stripped of his Architectural creative powers and his ability to see in nine dimensions, but I'd like him to still be A Monstrous Thing Jammed Into A Human Suit. Maybe at the full moon, he's actually forced to shed it and can't maintain his human appearance? Let's talk shop.

Element: Fire, which he's going to be pretty upset about for a while, all things considered.

Sample Section

First Person Sample: So, I've just finished my circuit of the entire place. It took a while. My feet hurt, which is new. But I found these things called "sneakers", and they seem to fit pretty nicely.

[he bounces a little on the balls of his feet like a boxer or a very inept kangaroo, or more accurately, someone who has never owned a pair of sneakers before and is very excited about it]

They're so cushy. I don't know what I was wearing those other shoes for before, other than, well, okay, they were really shiny, and they looked good with the suit. Wasn't that just so human of me, though? Hey! And I wasn't even thinking about it!

Anyway! The walk. Look, whoever your Architect was, he did a great job. There aren't any shortcuts for the most part, you have to take the long way around everything, and the restrooms are all really out of the way, and if you want something to eat that isn't one of the same three things, you have to come all the way back to Main Street. A plus job, Kingdom Architect, whoever you are. I could barely think of anything to improve. Maybe once some other stuff opens up, I'll find something.

[he pauses]

But should I really be thinking about this place like an Architect, or should I be thinking about it like a human? I mean ... I don't have my powers anymore, so ... oh, no. Did I do it wrong? Should I have been looking for ways to reverse what he did? Help me out. I don't know what you need. And ... and ... who was it? Scanlon! That's right. Scanlon. We all need to agree on what we want, about what we shouldn't do. And I don't know what you've all agreed we shouldn't do. Is there a list?
